By optimising the torque curve the BMW 3 serie E46 330D 204hp engine produces more torque at lower RPM.

they eventually got a 335d up to about 400bhp I think, but it's been a while since I've spoken to Ant.

£2-4k would seem to get a 330d. Can you really buy a 335i for anything close to this?

No. But it can be had for 10K and it would then be set up correctly to deal with 300 bhp (brakes, notably but the rest of the running gear too). Alternatively a good E36 M3 (3.0 possibly better at the budget) for 4-5K.
£2k doesn't buy a 330d worth having let alone one worth spending thousands on tuning parts for. They'll be fit for the bin at that money.

£10k is quite a different price though. And yes an e36 is an option, yet I'm repeatedly told on PH that they cost almost millionaire money to run and maintain (I don't actually believe this btw). But a diesel is still going to offer huge mpg savings in real world use.
I don't think you'd need to spend thousands tbh. And I've not looked at any £2k 330d's, but I don't really subscribe to them not being worth buying.
2k 330d's will have 130,000+ miles; and whilst the engine is strong, the turbo is not, the drive train is not and the electrics are starting to complain.

Mines on 141k and I'm on my second gearbox, brake pipes, rear shocks, and it's on it's way out. Which is a shame because the engine still pulls very hard.
Good info and I didn't mean that many will have done a lot of miles. But some people can only afford £2k cars and pretty much only get to drive stuff at this money. Also if you are used to running classics, you sort of accept age of a car and even mileage isn't always a limiting factor.
